What is Osteopathy for neck pain?

Neck pain osteopathy uses soft tissue massage and gentle manipulation of the neck to relieve pain.

Your neck is a delicate complex of nerves, bones and muscles

It’s an incredibly flexible and mobile part of the human body. It connects your spinal cord to your head while protecting a host of blood vessels, nerves and more. It’s a mass of skeletal muscle that supports your head, while allowing you to turn it in almost any direction.

It’s no surprise that two in three people experience acute or chronic neck pain during their life. Because it’s such an active joint in your body, with so many connections to your skull and upper body, the pain can be a sign or symptom of many different issues. Fortunately, physical therapy can help alleviate many of these.

Neck pain or stiffness can also lead to back pain and headaches. Issues with nerves in your neck may even lead to you experiencing weakness, numbness or pins and needles in your arms and legs.

We use a variety of osteopathic techniques to help reduce pain and encourage healing in your body.

How Osteopathy may help your neck pain.

Neck pain hurts. It hurts when you work, when you relax and even when you sleep. It can make you less productive, depress your mood and make you irritable to be around.

It can come on suddenly and linger for a while. It may go away just as unexpectedly. When you’re experiencing neck pain it can be difficult to do simple yet essential tasks, like dressing and driving. Frustratingly, it’s often not clear what brought the pain on or how you can make it go away.

Our approach is to understand what aspects of your life may be the reason for your neck pain.

Where appropriate, we provide physical therapy, with gentle massage and manipulation of joints and muscles. We also give you advice on exercises, such as stretching, that you can do at home to help reduce the risk of further pain.

To see improvement from neck pain often includes addressing your posture and other aspects of daily life. We advise on aspects of your lifestyle in order to help with recovery and ongoing health.

Neck pain and today’s lifestyle

Many of us spend a long time working at a computer, scrolling on our smartphone or driving cars. Our lack of movement during these tasks can put as much strain on our body as being very active.

Other causes of neck pain include:

Poor posture while standing or sitting
Stress or anxiety
Whiplash injury
Muscle strain
Sports injury
These can also lead to other problems such as shoulder pain or tennis elbow.

Wear and tear has a part to play in neck pain, as do conditions such as osteoarthritis and mental health issues like depression.

Our osteopaths work with many people who have suffered acute or chronic neck pain.

What to expect during osteopathy for neck pain

Having booked a consultation at our London, Surrey or Hertfordshire clinic, we send you a form that collects important details from you. This information is given to your personal osteopath before you arrive for your appointment, including your medical history.

The first session with your osteopath involves a detailed discussion of your medical history, your needs and any concerns you may have. They will also perform a non-invasive clinical examination. This gives your osteopath a better understanding of your neck pain, its impact on your life and its possible causes. With this information, they can produce a diagnosis.

Having completed the session with the osteopath, you are given follow-up advice, including recommended exercises such as neck stretches, that will help you to recover.
