What is the difference between an Osteopath and a Chiropractor?

A chiropractor and osteopath both diagnose and treat patients whose health problems are associated with the body's muscular, nervous, and skeletal systems, especially the spine. They believe that interference with these systems impairs the body?s normal functions and lowers its resistance to disease. They also hold that spinal or vertebral dysfunction alters many important body functions by affecting the nervous system and that skeletal imbalance through joint or articular dysfunction, especially in the spine, can cause pain.

Chiropractors believe that all problems stem from the spine itself, however although osteopaths believe that the spine plays an extremely important role in dysfunction, they also treat joints individually i.e. treating problems away from the spine e.g. knees, elbows etc...

Osteopathy treatment focuses on postural mechanics, and tend to spend more time using soft tissue release techniques. The length of their sessions also are 30 mins whereas a chiropractor tends to spend 15 mins.

Please note: All differences noted above are generalisations. All practitioners work differently and develop their own style. Discuss this with your practitioner on your next visit if you need any more information.
